Last week, Forbes interviewed me to discuss my favorite topic, glowing skin. Since the release of the article, I realized I have not covered this recently on my own site. I am beyond excited to share this story with you all because it’s honestly my most up-to-date skin routine. Let me know if you have any questions, and I’ll respond as soon as I can.
The ’90s were a decade of many things: Clinton sex scandals. The birth of Kendall Jenner. And — perhaps most importantly — matte makeup.
Thankfully, Americans left that beauty trend in the past. The modern woman has traded Monica’s oxblood lipstick for a softer look, colloquially known as “no makeup makeup.” We’re now all on the hunt for perfect, dewy skin.
Enter Annie Atkinson, a former beauty staffer at Chanel turned Michael Kors stylist turned blogger. She’s the founder of beloved beauty site, She’s in the, which focuses on finding the ultimate routine for skin that’s lit from within.
Atkinson’s knowledge of all things “glowing” has landed her words on the pages of Refinery29, Chalkboard and TeenVogue, securing her place in the hearts — and medicine cabinets — of women everywhere. Her live by tips and tricks — “Follow the same skincare routine twice a day” and “Stay away from powders at all costs” — are not only simple, but also effective. Needless to say, we’re big fans.
Forbes caught up with the blogging star at her stunning West Village apartment, settling in for a comprehensive tutorial on achieving a dewy complexion. Her personal routine is outlined below, complete with product suggestions and instructions.
1. Wash Your Face Morning And Night — And Never Leave A Stitch Of Makeup On While You Sleep
I Recommend: One Love Organics, Vitamin B Enzyme Cleansing Oil, $42
“Their cleanser creates little balls of product when you rub it on your skin, helping take the makeup off your face. I know a lot of people are afraid of using oil cleansers, but I promise this one won’t leave you with greasy skin. It also smells like pineapples and is full of Vitamin B for natural skin plumping.
2. Spray On A “Toner” — But Nothing Stringent
I Recommend: Tata Harper, Floral Essence Spray, $85
“I love this organic, nontoxic spray — I even have a mini one to keep on me at all times. It acts as a toner, evening out skin and giving a glow. Spray it all over your face, neck and chest immediately after washing your face — it’ll boost collagen and hydration like you won’t believe.”
3. Hydrate With A Serum
I Recommend: Vintner’s Daughter, Active Botanical Serum, $185
“This serum has tons of active ingredients. I tried it on a whim after hearing really good things, and the morning after woke up skin that was significantly more even. And all of my redness had gone away. There are so many serums out there that it’s hard to try them all, but using this one while my face is wet from the Floral Essence spray leaves skin plump and glowing.”
4. Tata Harper Moisturizer
I Recommend: Tata Harper, Repairative Moisturizer, $100
“Just like their hydrating spray, this is 100% all natural, nontoxic. It’s also a moisturizer that’s perfect for all skin types — when you put it on, you can literally feel your skin tightening and plumping. Tata Harper’s ingredients are built to mimic the effects of collagen, which give a lifted effect. My skin feels so glowy and dewy after.”
5. Follow Up With An Eye Cream
I Recommend: Verso, Super Eye Serum, $80
“I always use an eye cream twice a day. I love Verso — it’s based in Sweden, and contains very concentrated amounts of retinol. Because it’s such a concentrated amount, the effects are high while the probability for allergies is low. This, for me, is the one eye serum that really gets rid of the bags under my eyes. Because of the strong ingredients, use this every other day and alternate with One Love Organics eye balm.”
6. Skip Foundation For A Simple Highlighting Routine
I Recommend Yves Saint Laurent, Touche Eclat, $42
“I hate the idea of wearing something that’s going to clog my pores all day, long, so I prefer a simple highlighter to give my face the glow it needs. I use the Touche Eclat around my nose, under my eyes, under my brows and on my cupids bow. But it’s not a concealer — so, don’t use it on any sort of imperfection or blemish. It will only call attention.”
7. Top Off With Luminizer
I Recommend RMS, Living Luminizer, $38
“Rose Marie Swift is this amazing makeup artist who created a line of certified organic, mostly cream based products. This particular product is in every makeup artist’s kit. Apply it all over your eyelids, above lips, on the brim of your nose and then brush onto your forehead. You can even apply it onto your collar bones for added shimmer.”
8. Use Cream Blush Instead Of Bronzer For Natural Color
I Recommend: Tata Harper, Volumizing Lip & Cheek Tint, Very Sweet, $35
“I like Tata Harper’s cheek tint in the color Berry Sweet. I actually only use it on my cheeks, because it gives such a pretty glow and helps volumize my cheeks.
9. Finish the Look with a Transparent Finishing Powder
I Recommend: RMS, “Un” Powder, $34
“This totally transparent powder softens skin, minimize pores and removes excess shine for a polished, fresh finish. It’s all natural and made to work in sync with RMS Living Luminizer and Concealer, which are my favorites too. As far as application goes, here is my quick tip: To minimize shine and set makeup for the day, lightly dust your skin with powder using a powder brush. This should be the last step in your routine. Concentrate on the T-zone area, and on the corners of the nose and under the eyes. But, don’t over do it. A little goes a long way.”
