When it’s cold out, your skin takes a hit. It’s tighter and drier than normal, and a face full of foundation just doesn’t work. But, girls, just because it’s freezing outside doesn’t mean our whole look should suffer, right? We are still allowed to look our very best, whether we are heading to the office or out for Saturday afternoon brunch. Last winter, I did a how-to on Diane Kruger’s character in Wicker Park. She totally mastered that pretty wintery pale skin look, and this week I wanted to create a fresh daytime update. If you know me you know that I have come a long way from my airbrush and fake bake tanning days and certainly embraced the whole New York City pale vibes. I think it just looks chic to be pale. But, if you are going to do pale, you have to do it right. You need something happening on your face otherwise you just look dead.
What I like about Diane’s character (back to Winter Park) is that for the most part her look is very natural, with just a hint of color. These days I am feeling cherry, a color that perfectly delivers that “bitten” look and strikes the perfect balance of vampire chic and ‘I just stepped out from the cold and whoops I have those perfectly flushed cheeks’ look. You know what I am talking about, right? Oh, and if you take a look at Diane’s skin in snapshots from Wicker Park, you’re sure to become envious of the quality of her complexion. Its flawless, yet seemingly makeup free. To get the look, you want clean, but certainly not dull skin. During the day, the key to long-term luminosity is a trifecta of three major products: oil + moisturizer + luminizing lotion. I’m now whipping up a concoction of Sisley Black Rose Oil with Tata Harper Reparative Moisturizer and Mac Strobe Lotion. This combo is straight up divine. Once you’ve applied this magical combo, skip your foundation and bronzer. This is how you can get the prettiest wintery bitten look in just 5 products (and 5 minutes!).
Step 1: Skip the concealer and use a highlighting pen instead, under the eyes and around the nose. A little under eye darkness actually enhances this frost bitten look. I still like YSL’s good ole’ Touche Eclat but Dolce’s Perfect Luminous Concealer is an excellent choice too. (If you do need to cover any other imperfections, you should use your normal concealer).
Step 2: RMS Beauty Living Luminizer is the best way to glow without looking shimmery or sparkly. It’s like the perfect color. Apply on your lids, brim of nose, Cupid’s bow and anyway else you want to be dewy.
Step 3: Clear mascara is my new best friend. I use Maybelline Clear Brow Gel, because why not save a little here and there? It’s really good and keeps my brows in place all day. Brush up and out. I also use this to naturally lengthen my lashes.
Step 4: Tata Harper’s new Naughty Volumizing Lip and Cheek is the prettiest red! It smells great and kind of lifts your cheeks. It’s totally non-toxic and organic, so it won’t kill your skin. The color is perfect and looks like your have been caught in the wind. Apply on the apples of your cheeks and blend up into the hairline and right below the temples.
Step 5: When it’s freezing your lips look cold, bitten and blue. This look can be overwhelmingly gorgeous when done right or totally gross if you’re lips are dry and cracked. Bite’s Agave Lip Mask is like the best of both worlds – the prettiest color and finish plus the nourishing properties of a mask! The newest shade – red-wine – also has a red tint and feels think and rich without being sticky or annoying to wear.
