This is how to get Younger Looking Hands

Girls, it’s time to make hand and nail care a priority. Just like our necks and décolleté, our hands are one of the first parts of our bodies to show signs of aging (eeeek!), which is why our hands need a little extra TLC (like this DIY hand mask inspired by Tata Harper) to stay looking healthy and young.

With daily exposure to sun, chemicals and general wear and tear, our hands go through a lot. Following these simple steps everyday (and it’s never too early OR late to start) will insure your skin and nails get the moisture, protection and healing they need.

Of course, the quickest fix is a manicure. After a recent visit to one of my favorite and fashion forward salons, Paintbox in Soho, my hands have never looked or felt better. I left with perfectly cut and moisturized cuticles, soft hands and the coolest looking set of nails. On a mission to keep my fabulous manicure fresh, I adopted a daily routine that is easy and effective, and, I’ve got to say, it really works.

Here are my tips that I learned from the lovely nail tech professionals at Paintbox:

1. Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen.

Just like our face, our hands need to be protected from harsh UV rays everyday. Adding just one layer is the best defense against wrinkles, sunspots and long-term damage. Natural sunscreens with zinc and titanium dioxide are the best, as they leave hands feeling moisturized without the grease or smell. (Mani tip: put sunscreen on your hands or ask for some before a gel manicure to prevent damage from ultraviolet light boxes).

2. Cuticle oil

Cuticle oil doesn’t just feel good. It’s also is the best way to preserve those newly manicured nails. Unlike lotion and cream, oil absorbs into your nails, so use it in the morning and at night to help moisturize dry skin and strengthen the quality of your nails. To get the best results, run your hands under warm water, dry off and apply a couple of drops. Massage in for a few minutes then wipe off any excess oil. One of my favorites is the all-natural Uka nail oil (read my full review on Uka here). It’s easy to use on the go and doubles as an essential oil perfume. For an at-home alternative, use jojoba, coconut or olive oil.

3. Hand cream

The best way to fight dry, cracking skin is by moisturizing throughout the day. Natural oil is the best form of hydration for hands and nails, so go for a cream without artificial fragrances or chemicals to insure that your skin will absorb the moisture without getting irritated. All-star Australian line, Jurlique, has made our job easy with its two in one hand and nail cream. Powerful botanicals, antioxidants, Carrot Root Extract and Vitamin E combined with a dreamy rose scent make this the perfect cream for all-day hand hydration.
