Portable Perfume: The Summer Beauty Trend I’m Loving

When it comes to perfume, I’m pretty boring. I’m quite loyal to my signature scents, so I rarely venture outside of my comfort zone. You’ll notice this is a theme in my life. Products I receive go through a very rigorous testing phase before they make it into my day-to-day regiment. To help me push this process along, I have an intern who keeps me fresh. She helps me go through everything I’m sent, so I don’t miss any hidden gems that cross my path.

She REALLY saved me the other day when a mailing from Catbird (you know, the culty-cool Brooklyn-based boutique known for their jewelry) was delivered to my door. As she was reviewing the solid perfume trio inside, she stopped in her tracks, exclaiming, “Who, these are SO good.” I smelled the perfumes myself and couldn’t help but agree.

That got me thinking. Wouldn’t it be great to carry around your favorite sexy summer scent wherever you go — something chic and portable to apply whenever you’re craving a midday refresher? (You know, when the scent of the subway is just too gross to handle.)

With this in mind, these Catbird babies were PERFECT. The collection is made up of 3 equally delicious scents. Kitten (notes of musk, amber and violet) is a love letter to the early girls of Catbird, with visions of dusty records, lipstick and feather pillows.” Tarot Deck (notes of incense, pencil shaving and Turkish rose) is a “dusty, romantic mystery, a steamy night behind the embassy.” It smells of dry musk and a hint of smoke. Lastly, Ghost Rose (notes of English rose, champagne and peony) is a “lost estate, an age ago, where sylphs wound through the damp, thorny gardens at night.” They’re just as amazing as they sound.

There’s more where those portable bits of perfection came from.

Another fragrance brand that’s caught my attention is By Rosie. She has quickly become one of my favorite under-the-radar brands for her poppy lip and cheek balms and, of course, her rollerball fragrances. James Fragrance Oil (notes of fig, amber and gardenia) is light, earthy and romantic. Leila Lou (notes of pear, jasmine and freshly cut grass) is clean, fresh and totally addicting. Tilly (notes of grapefruit, pineapple and tropical gardenia) is warm, sensual and delicate.

Not yet satisfied? Another brand I love is 1509. It’s perfect for girls like me who love distinct smells (think Byredo’s entire collection) and want to try something new and possibly even more unique. It’s made right here in New York City, and is another pure fragrance oil similar in vibe to By Rosie. The base note is clean, warm amber and the top note is baby’s breath. It’s got a sweet and slight smoky scent, and it’s actually hydrating to your skin. Yes, it’s possible! It’s also quite beautiful to look at, as there’s actual baby’s breath that floats inside the bottle. The scent is unisex, but if you’re looking to get something for your guy, I’d suggest looking at Matthias. Same vibe, but it’s just a bit more masculine.

I think it’s safe to say this whole on-the-go fragrance thing is a trend worth paying attention to.
