Model Off Duty Beauty: What I Learned at #NYFW

Over the past few weeks, I’ve spent a lot of time backstage, and I couldn’t help but take note of each model’s pre-show wardrobe and beauty sitch. In addition to plenty of water, green juice and eating organic, I discovered that, when these girls aren’t working, they give their skin a much needed break from the heavy chemical products they have to pile on for each show. Often times they switch to organic and all-natural makeup and skincare whenever possible. When it comes to the model off duty look, less is definitely more. This translates very well to my own personal theory that when you have great skin, you simply don’t need a boatload of makeup.

While they are often recognized for their presence on the runway, it’s that ‘model off duty’ vibe, complete with barely-there makeup, an ethereal glow and clothes that seem effortlessly thrown together, that I’m obsessed with.  You know the look I am talking about: clean, radiant skin, so luminous and dewy, maybe even a glossy eye and that Proenza Schouler hair. Want to know how to pull off their whole no-makeup makeup look? I’ve got you covered.

Fortunately, this look is my specialty. These are the products that are currently being used by models everywhere:

Dior Nail Glow, $25 – This nail lacquer enhances the color of your natural nails. When applied on bare nails, the pinks of the nails become pinker and the whites become whiter for a shining, healthy glow effect. This is a great alternative to your typical ballerina pink that was seen everywhere this season.

Revlon Photoready Skinlights Face Illuminator, Bare Light, $10.99 – This illuminator will give you a perfect glow in any light. Wear alone to highlight and brighten or wear with foundation to prevent against dullness, illuminate and even out skin tone.

Make Face Gloss, $25 – A little goes a long way. This is an essential product when you are trying to achieve the pretty winter makeup look. Pop it on your lids, cheekbones and Cupid’s bow.

MAC Cosmetics In Extreme Dimension 3D Black Mascara, $21 – A newfound classic. As great as my Dior Show and model fave.

Tata Harper Be Fierce Lip Treatment, $24 – Simple, yet effective lip treatment. It’s got a fantastic smell and comes in the cutest green container. Gucci Westman used this as eye gloss at Public School this Fall 2014 season.

Bb Mending Masque, $38 – My friend Sam Shaw got me into this. She’s the Director of PR at Bumble and Bumble and claims that this, and the Bb Mending Complex, brought her hair back from the dead. Both were used backstage everywhere from Rosie Assoulin to Thom Browne.

Pixi Skintreats Glow Tonic, $29 – This is my newest obsession! I use this morning, noon and night before moisturizing.

RMS Beauty Oil, $74 – A model’s standby. Created by Rose Marie Swift (who I love!), the product was crafted specifically for models. Miranda Kerr swears by this.

Maybelline Baby Lips, $4.99 – Backstage at Mara Hoffman, these little lippies were used to create the perfect eye gloss. Love a multi-functioning product!

Moroccan Oil Treatment, $14.80 – I just brought this oil mini on vaca to Antigua, and used liberally on my ends after the ocean and the shower to protect from dryness and seal in moisture. I saw this product at Delpozo.

Crest 3D White Strips 1 Hour Express, $49 – With all the coffee that these girls drink to stay alert in the wee hours of the morning and night while at work, their teeth take a serious hit. Use these strips for one hour and they make a major (professional strength) change.

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics White Eyeliner, $16 – The secret to brighter, more alert eyes is a little white liner on the inner rim of the eyes, a classic model trick.

Bite Agave Lip Mask, $26 – While using your teeth whiteners, pop on a lip mask, because why not? This mask also doubles as a super moisturizing lip balm.

Ren Glycol Lactic Masque, $55 – An oldie but a goodie. This mask is packed with powerful antioxidants and can be used weekly to maintain glowy skin.

Make Dual-Phase Eye Makeup Remover, $30 – Nothing like a solid makeup remover. This one works wonders.

VS Pro RX Smooth FX Lip Scrub & Balm, $16 – This scrub tastes and smells so much like sugar you almost want to eat it. I am so happy I found this product.

Chloe See By Chloe EDP, $78 – This baby comes packaged in a strong and feminine bottle. The refined, faceted glass catches the light to give a real luxurious feel. Apply with its nail polish-esque brush on the wrists and neck.

RGB Cuticle Oil, $20 – Let’s not forget our pretty little fingers now!

Now all I need is Gucci’s fringe bag that I am LUSTING over, and I’ll feel instantly transformed.
