This Fashion Week has been full of new inspiration. I have yet to walk out of a show feeling disappointed or underwhelmed. While each show has offered something unique and beautiful, I’ve definitely noticed a few key trends. One of my favorites so far is the glossy eye. I’ve seen this everywhere. Designers like Public School, DVF, Monique Lhullier, Charlotte Ronson, Delpozo and Mara Hoffman seem to be cozying up to this Spring trend that I consider a true staple. It creates a low-key, understated vibe that is chic beyond belief.
While backstage, I got the inside scoop on how each designer achieved the look. At Public School, Gucci Westman used Tata Harper Lip Treatment to create to perfect gloss. At Mara Hoffman, makeup artists used a blend of Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream with Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm to create the perfect dewy lid.
My favorite variation of this chic trend was created by DVF. Makeup artist James Kaliardos created a modern day ballerina, employing techniques normally used by dancers onstage, such as contouring the sides of the face with various tones of concealer and brightening the eyes by rimming the lower waterline with MAC Cosmetics’ forthcoming Technokohl liner in Nude (try my fave Revlon Lip Liner in Natural in the meantime). “You know when you see those girls from ballet school and they just look like ballerinas even though they don’t have makeup on? This is what we’re doing,” Kaliardos explained. He even mixed a shadow with a lipstick (Grey Matter, a cream shade from the Fall 2014 Trend Palette, and Dusty Mauve, a hue from the season’s lip palette) to achieve the perfect eye.
This is how you get the “glossy taupe” look:
2. Choose a creme based shadow like RMS Beauty Magnetic (a taupey silvery shadow with a hint of mauve – this color is DOPE) and dap on top of the waxy primer using your ring finger. Cover the eyelid to right below the crease and go slightly outside the eye in a triangular shape.
3. Add just the slightest bit of gloss, like Make Face Gloss (which is the bomb), for additional sheen.
4. Coat the top lashes with something major like Dior Show Waterproof Mascara. Or leave them bare for a cleaner or morning look.
And just like that you’ll be effortlessly transformed into a chic DVF ballerina.
